THE SPIRITUAL LEADER: DEBORAH

Deborah was unique among both men and women of bible history, she was a prophetess, a judge and a military leader all in one- a powerful triple combination of authority and responsibility held by only two other Israelites, Moses and Samuel.

She was referred to as the mother in Israel because of her leadership in the battle against Canaanite oppression.

Unlike most great women in the bible, who were related or married to great men (eg. Esther and her adviser and uncle, Modecai, Sarah married to Abraham, etc.), the only thing about Deborah’s personal life was her husband, Lappidoth (who wasn’t exactly considered great in the bible).

LESSONS TO LEARN FROM DEBORAH

Courage: Deborah was full of courage, she was ready to take up a challenge a man was scared of. One important fact to note was that she was full of courage not because she trusted in her own self but because she had full faith in God.

Fearless: She had a fearless attitude ready to lure the commander of Jabin’s army together with his chariots (note: these were well trained men of war)

Wise In wisdom: she judged and prophesied.

Deborah was both a wife, prophetess, judge and a military leader.

Her attitude must have been what a man can do a woman can definitely do better. She overlooked the challenges and obstacles, she had a goal and nothing was going to stop her not even her sex.
