The TOMS story: More than Just a Business Idea

The TOMS story

Blake went on a visit to Argentina when he discovered that a lot of the kids there walked barefoot. They had no protection for their feet and were vulnerable to diseases and infections.

Blake brainstormed on how he could supply these children with shoe while still having profit. He came up with the idea of remodeling the most famous shoe in Argentina, the ‘Alpagarata’, so that it would be able to sell in the American market.

More than just a Business Idea

His idea was that for each TOMS shoe he sold, a child would equally receive a pair of shoes. The name TOMS came from ‘shoes for TOMorrow’.  Subsequently Blake alongside Alejo, his translator and business partner tried out different materials to get the perfect shoe. He took all they had made and started to sell. The story behind the business attracted others as Ralph Lauren, Teen Vogue etc. They told the TOMS story and therefore helped in getting more children shoes.

To make people attracted to TOMS and ask about it, Blake normally wore mismatched TOMS with blue on one leg and red on the other, that was the extent of Blake’ passion. To help us know if we are passionate, he asked these questions:

  • If you did not have to worry about money, what would you do with your time?
  • What kind of work would you want to do?
  • What cause would you serve?

Connect your passion to something you can support and help. You do not need perfect knowledge to follow your passion/ dream. You need to deliberately create a story that makes your passion bigger than yourself. If you can achieve your passion all by yourself, you probably do not have a deep story attached to it.

Let us not fear to start new things, create hypothesis and see what works out. Fear should not hold us down.

Which story are you working with today? Which Business Idea do you have
