Philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson said “talent for talents sake is a bauble and a show. Talent working with joy in the cause of universal truth lifts the possessor to a new power as a benefactor”

The question now is, is talent ever enough ? How far can talent take you? I thought once I’m talented I have it all. But that’s not always the case because Talent itself needs to be refined consistently if it is to ever stay fresh and relevant.

As a football lover one of the vast argument in this line is between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi and countless times I’ve heard people say Messi is more talented but Ronaldo trains a lot, I always just encourage my friends to enjoy the blessing of watching the two play.

But I can imagine if their arguments are true, Messi is more Talented but this reminds me of a friend of mine from Junior secondary Chima, Chima was the best dribbler I have seen, I can’t even argue about his talent, he does it effortlessly but today he is an accountant, a successful one.

Even if we compare Messi to other professional footballers, I’m sure we can mention a ton of them who are as talented as Messi but the difference is clear. This is not intended to spring an argument but to emphasis the importance of refining your talent consistently.

Talent stands you out at the beginning, it gets you noticed, it gives you an head start, puts you at an advantage. But what happens after then is dependent upon how well you work on that talent.

What separates the talented individual from the successful one is a lot of hard work; you would have to agree with me that Cristiano Ronaldo is not the most talented footballer you know but the Man has five (5) balloon D’or to his name and he is not done yet.

Clearly, you need more than just talent to achieve success, especially to remain a success.
